London Labour Market

27 Février 2013 , Rédigé par Nicolas KOLZ Publié dans #english

In the same way that Paris is the economic centre of France, London plays a major role in the UK economy. In fact, it represents near to 20% of the British GDP.

With regard to the media sector, many of the Media and Communication companies are in London, such as the British giant BBC, Sky, Reuters and Channel4. Overall about 53% of jobs related to television and radio media are located in London.

However the field in which London is most widely recognised is finance. Indeed, thanks to the famous ‘City of London’, London is known by many specialists as one of the biggest financial capitals in the world. And yet this field has been stricken by the 2007 economic crisis with no less than 100 000 jobs lost in the City of London since this time.

Indeed behind this domination from London in high growth fields, there is another reality for the London inhabitants. The unemployment rate forecast for start 2013 in London is 10.7%, which is higher than the national UK unemployment rate average of 8.7% (November 2012).

To conclude on something more positive, let’s have a look at the benefits of the London 2012 Olympics Games. The opening ceremony gathered no less than 4 billion viewers and there were around 150 million tweets relating to the Olympics during this period. This led to maximum exposure for London and during these 2 weeks it was the centre of the world. We have to admit that all had been done by UK’s government and population to ensure it was a great success. Thanks to the 2012 Games, London is now equipped with the most modern and innovative infrastructures in terms of communication and sports buildings.

London showed its best side to the world during the Olympics. This was mostly thanks to the 70,000 volunteers and amazing events the city put on. This event benefitted many companies in London who took good advantage of this busy period.
